Beef Curry with Potatoes

Beef curry with potatoes. Yes with potatoes… like I’ve mentioned before my older son doesn’t prefer meat much and so almost all our non veg curries have potatoes. But trust me, the potatoes actually add more flavor to the dish. Isn’t it anyway the Western way of eating meat. Meat with potatoes in pies, KFC with mashed potatoes or fries, Grilled chicken with roasted potatoes, ….

Anyway to the recipe

Beef Curry with Potatoes

  • 1 kg – beef cubes, boneless
  • 2 onions chopped or sliced
  • 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp – turmeric powder
  • 3 tsps – meat masala powder (if you dont have meat masala, read the notes below)
  • 1.5 tsp – Kashmiri chilli powder
  • 2 tsps – corriander pdr
  • 1 tsp – pepper powder
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • 1 potato, cubed
  • 3-4 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • salt
  • Curry leaves

In a pressure cooker, heat the coconut oil, add mustard seeds and let it splutter.

Add the chopped onions and saute till it becomes translucent. Then add ginger garlic paste and saute for a minute more.

To this add all your masalas and saute it again for a good 2-3 minutes. Ensure it doesn’t burn.

Add the tomatoes, green chillies and torn curry leaves. Saute it again till tomatoes mush up. Add water and keep sauteing till the onions and tomatoes are almost dissolved and oil starts rising from the sides.

Now add the washed beef cubes and mix it all well. Let it cook on high for 2 mins.

Since, this is a beef curry, I add 1/2 cup of water to this. Let it come to a boil. Add salt. Cover the cooker and cook for 3 whistles on high, then reduce the flame and cook for 10 mins. Once, the pressure releases on its own, open the cooker. The beef would be cooked almost 90%. Add the potato cubes and cook for another 5 mins.

(Since, the raw meat tenderness varies, pls check your meat after you pressure cook. If you feel, the beef is completely cooked when you opened the cooker, then boil the potatoes separately with salt and then add to the curry. Similarly, if it needs to cook more, let it come to a level where it’s almost cooked, then add potatoes and cook again.)

Garnish with a tadka of curry leaves. I didn’t have any more left with me for garnish, so didnt add.

Beef curry with potatoes is ready to serve along with rice, naan, chapathi. I served it with lacha paratha.

This recipe will not give you a lot of gravy. If you want more gravy, add a little more water and add a tsp more of coriander powder. As always, you can reduce the spice. My husband likes it really spicy and for the kids, I balance it with a little bit of yogurt on the side.

Enjoy
