Tomato Chutney!

This Tomato chutney, is actually an old post. I had earlier put it along with the Coconut Chutney. But then, I don’t know why, I suddenly felt it needed its own space. So here it is. Without much talks, let me just cut and paste it here 😛

  • Chana dal (split bengal gram) – 1 tablespoon
  • Tomato, chopped – 2
  • Onion, chopped – 1
  • Small Onions – 5-6
  • Red Chillies – 2
  • Garlic – 3 pods
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric powder (haldi) – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida (hing) – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Light Coconut Milk – 3 tablespoons
  • Tamarind – a small piece ( soak it in little water for about 5 minutes and squeeze it well in the water to extract all the goodness of the tamarind).

For The Tempering

  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red Chillies – 2
  • Oil – 1 tablespoon

Heat the oil in a pan, and add onions and saute for 2 minutes. To this, add curry leaves, red chillies, chana dal, turmeric powder and asafoetida and stir for a few minutes.

Then add the chopped tomatoes and saute for about 5 minutes to soften them.

Remove from the fire and cool to room temperature.

Put the tomato mixture in a blender, add salt and a little water and grind to a coarse paste. Keep aside.

Meanwhile, prepare the tempering by heating the oil again in a pan (you can use the same one where you sautéed the onions and tomatoes. One less dish to wash 🙂 ). Add the mustard seeds and red chillies and fry till the seeds crackle.

Pour the tempering over the chutney and mix well.

Serve with Dosa or Idli (I can even have it with Kerala Parotta, Chapathi or Nan! 🙂 )
